Hagia Sophia
A Monument of Many Faiths
About Hagia Sophia
Istanbul
The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is a symbol of religious and architectural transformation. Built in 537 AD by Emperor Justinian I, it was the largest church of the Byzantine Empire for centuries. After the Ottoman conquest in 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II, who added Islamic features while preserving Christian mosaics.
In 1935, it became a museum under Atatürk, showcasing both Christian and Islamic heritage. In 2020, it was reconverted into a functioning mosque, but remains open to visitors of all faiths, admired for its vast dome, historic mosaics, and unique blend of cultures.
