About Gornergrat Railway
Switzerland
The Gornergrat Railway is a historic cogwheel train that travels from Zermatt to the Gornergrat summit at 3,089 metres, offering spectacular views of the Matterhorn and 29 other peaks over 4,000 metres. Opened in 1898, it was Switzerland’s first electric cogwheel railway and remains Europe’s highest open-air railway. The 9.34-kilometre journey takes about 33 minutes, climbing 1,469 metres through stations like Riffelalp, Riffelberg, and Rotenboden. At the summit, you can enjoy 360° views, visit the Kulm Hotel and observatory, and explore Europe’s highest alpine garden. The Gornergrat Railway operates year-round, with trains running regularly from early morning until after sunset. A unique feature is the “Meet the Sheep” app, launched in 2022, which lets you track the location of Valais Blacknose sheep grazing in the area during the summer months. The Gornergrat Railway offers a memorable alpine experience, combining breathtaking vistas, historical charm, and unique wildlife encounters.
