About Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Italy
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of Milan’s most iconic landmarks and one of the world’s oldest shopping arcades. Built between 1865 and 1877 and named after the first king of unified Italy, the Galleria connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala. It was designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni in a grand neoclassical and iron-and-glass style, with a soaring central dome and elegant mosaic floors. Often referred to as “Milan’s living room,” the Galleria is home to luxury boutiques such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci, alongside historic cafés and restaurants like Savini and Biffi. It’s a place where high fashion, fine dining, and historic architecture converge. One popular tradition is to spin on the heel of your foot on the bull depicted in the mosaic floor—said to bring good luck. Whether for shopping, people-watching, or admiring 19th-century grandeur, the Galleria offers a quintessential Milanese experience.
