About Fishermans Bastion
Budapest
Fisherman’s Bastion is one of Budapest’s most picturesque landmarks, perched on Castle Hill in the Buda district. Built between 1895 and 1902 and designed by architect Frigyes Schulek, it was constructed to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian state. Despite its medieval appearance, it was never intended as a defensive fortification but rather as a decorative viewing terrace. The structure features seven distinctive white stone towers, symbolising the seven Magyar tribes that founded Hungary in 895. From its terraces, you are treated to sweeping views of the Danube River, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and the Pest side of the city. The bastion sits beside Matthias Church, and together they form one of the most visited spots in Budapest. Its fairy-tale appearance, with turrets, arches, and stairways, makes it a favourite location for photos and a peaceful place to enjoy the city skyline.
