About Cibele's Fountain (Fuente de Cibeles)
Madrid
In front of the Palacio de Cibeles, Cybele’s Fountain stands as one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. Cybele is the goddess of fertility and nature and is depicted riding a chariot drawn by two lions, symbolising her dominion over the natural world and her power. Originally constructed in 1782, the fountain was designed to supply water for public use, and over the years, it has become an essential part of Madrid’s cultural life. Real Madrid fans traditionally celebrate their team’s victories by gathering at the fountain after winning major tournaments, and the fountain has witnessed important political moments, such as during the return of King Alfonso XIII after a period of exile, where the king himself was paraded through the square. At night the fountain is particularly picturesque as it is beautifully illuminated after the sun has gone down.
