About Central Market Hall
Budapest
The Central Market Hall in Budapest, also known as Nagyvásárcsarnok, is the largest and oldest indoor market in the city. It was built in 1897 and designed by Samu Pecz in a distinctive Neo-Gothic style, featuring a striking steel structure and a colourful Zsolnay tiled roof. Located at the end of the famous shopping street Váci utca, the market is a vibrant hub of local culture and commerce. The ground floor is filled with stalls selling fresh produce, meats, spices, and Hungarian specialities like paprika and salami, while the upper floor hosts vendors offering souvenirs, folk art, and traditional street food such as lángos. In the basement, you’ll find fishmongers and pickled goods. Popular with both locals and tourists, the market is not only a place to shop but also to experience the sights, sounds, and flavours of everyday Hungarian life.
