About Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Cattedrale di San Lorenzo)
Genoa
The Cathedral of St. Lawrence, or Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, was consecrated in the 12th century and later enhanced with Gothic and Renaissance elements, making it one of Genoa’s most iconic landmarks. Its striking black-and-white striped façade, flanked by intricately carved lions and arched portals, leads into a richly decorated interior with frescoes, chapels, and a crypt said to hold relics of St. John the Baptist.
The cathedral also houses the Treasury Museum, which preserves sacred artefacts including the Sacro Catino, a mysterious green glass bowl long believed to be the Holy Grail. Throughout history, the cathedral has withstood fires, renovations, and even a World War II bomb that miraculously failed to detonate, a testament to its enduring significance to the city and its people.
Entry to the cathedral is free and can be enjoyed independently. Tickets are required for the Treasury Museum and guided tours, which are recommended for those interested in deeper historical insights.
