Catacombs of Paris
Illuminated labyrinth in former limestone mine with millions of ghoulishly arranged skeletons
About Catacombs of Paris
France
The Catacombs of Paris are a subterranean ossuary that holds the remains of over six million people. Located about 20 metres beneath the city, they were created in the late 18th century to deal with the overcrowding of Parisian cemeteries, especially the infamous Cimetière des Innocents. The bones were transferred into a network of former limestone quarries and later arranged in a macabre yet orderly fashion, forming walls of skulls and femurs along dark, narrow tunnels. Opened to the public in 1809, you enter through a small, unassuming building near Denfert-Rochereau metro station and descend 130 spiral steps to reach the tunnels. The experience is haunting and atmospheric, beginning with a chilling inscription above the entrance that reads: “Arrête ! C’est ici l’empire de la mort.”—”Stop! This is the empire of death.” As you walk through the dimly lit corridors, the air remains cool at around 14°C all year, and the silence is broken only by your footsteps and the occasional drip of water from the ceiling. Due to the popularity of the catacombs and a strict limit of 200 visitors at a time, it is essential to book tickets in advance.
