Capuchin Catacombs
A Haunting Journey Through Time
About Capuchin Catacombs
Italy
The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo were built as a simple cemetery in which to bury the deceased friars of the monastery. In 1597, when the room for the cemetery was insufficient and excavations occurred to expand its size, 45 of the exhumed bodies were found naturally mummified and magnificently preserved. The Capuchins believed it was an act of God and instead of burying the remains, decided to display and adore the bodies of their brothers as relics, propped against the walls of the corridors.
