Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)
A Masterpiece of Ottoman Architecture
About Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)
Istanbul
Located in the heart of Istanbul, the Blue Mosque – formally known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque – is one of Turkey’s most iconic and historically significant landmarks. Commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I and completed in 1616, the mosque was built to rival the grandeur of the nearby Hagia Sophia. It is renowned for its stunning blue İznik tiles, which adorn the interior and give the mosque its popular nickname.
The mosque features six slender minarets, a central dome flanked by semi-domes, and an expansive courtyard—an architectural statement of the Ottoman Empire’s power and devotion. Inside, the vast prayer hall is illuminated by more than 260 windows, once filled with Venetian stained glass, and decorated with thousands of hand-painted tiles.
