About Basilica di Santa Croce
Italy
The Basilica di Santa Croce in Lecce is a stunning example of Baroque architecture built on the site of a 14th-century monastery. The construction began in 1549 and took nearly two centuries to complete. The portals were added starting in 1606 under the direction of Francesco Antonio Zimbalo, with the upper façade and rose window completed by Cesare Penna and the final decorative touches by Giuseppe Zimbalo. The basilica is renowned for its intricate and ornate design, with stunning sculptures, carvings and decorations. The church’s facade is one of the most striking features, with its ornate decorations and sculptural details, including angels, biblical figures, and symbolic motifs. The use of local Lecce stone, which is soft and easy to carve, allowed artisans to create intricate designs, adding to the basilica’s unique charm. The rose window and upper façade were completed by Cesare Penna, and the church’s elaborate interior is adorned with altars, frescoes, and statues depicting religious scenes and saints.
