A Review of Monopoli's Best Hotel - Locanda Don Ferrante

When visiting Monopoli, there is one hotel that stands out from the crowd. The only 5-star hotel in the town, The Locanda Don Ferrante is a charming and ancient complex situated in the heart of Monopoli’s historical centre, just beside the sea. This is Monopoli’s best hotel!

A short history

The building has been carefully restored to retain its original character and charm. The hotel takes its name from Don Ferrante, also known as Ferdinando Loffredo. He was a Neapolitan nobleman who held many titles such as First Marquis of Trevico, Lord of San Sossio and Zingoli, Governor General of Bari and Otranto, Lord of Lecce and Dean of the Sacro Regio Consiglio. When he became the Viceroy of Bari and Otranto, new defensive city walls were built in Monopoli, as well as parts of the castle, which is now known as Charles V Castle. A little fortress was also built on the southern side of the walls, and this is where the hotel building lies today. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the Adriatic Sea on one side and the town’s whitewashed houses on the other. The surrounding area is rich with historical churches, magnificent palaces and narrow alleys that make up the charming town. As the sun sets, the 14 chimneys of the terrace are lit up, creating a romantic ambiance. Guests can also relax and soak up the sun by the outdoor pool while taking in the beautiful sea view during the day.

The Castle of Charles V, just across the street, was built during the Spanish domination of the city in the 16th century as part of a defensive system along with the city walls to protect the Apulian coast, under the command of the emperor Charles V and the supervision of the Marquis Don Ferrante Loffredo.

Hotel services & amenities

The hotel’s restaurant serves a rich continental breakfast buffet daily in the main building, which takes place in a XVI century gunpowder store with a stone barrel vaulted ceiling. With freshly baked pastries, local cold cuts and cheese, and a variety of other delicious delights to start the day, you can’t go wrong!

Their seasonal restaurant on the terrace serves amazing local seafood and Mediterranean flavours. Not to mention the views are truly incredible. You won’t want to leave from daytime to sunset in their jacuzzi tub with views of the sea.

The staff at Don Ferrante are amazingly friendly and helpful. They are truly dedicated to ensuring that guests have an enjoyable and memorable stay (and that I did have!). They were always available to provide information and local recommendations. And, they can help you plan your day in the picturesque old town of Monopoli. If you prefer a more relaxing approach (as I do) you can simply sunbathe on the hotel’s terrace. Or perhaps rejuvenate with a soothing massage or cool down in the outdoor pool.

Overall thoughts

The Locanda Don Ferrante is a magical and romantic hotel that offers exquisite service and is beautifully decorated with well-kept rooms. AS the only 5-star hotel in Monopoli, it is worth every penny! The bathrooms are well-lit, the beds are comfortable, and the linens are of excellent quality (Frette linens). The location is perfect, as you are both in the heart of the historical centre and close to the beaches, allowing you to experience the best of both worlds. The rooftop is open for drinks and meals has an incredible view and it will be hard to tear yourself away (not to mention, the cocktails and mocktails are great). The staff is friendly and helpful, and they can accommodate guests with special dietary needs, such as gluten-free options.
We highly recommended for a luxurious and romantic stay! Overall, it’s a lovely place to stay and I am sure I will be visiting again.
