Coffee with Claudia from Locanda in Tuscany, Val d'Orcia

When you think of Tuscany, you probably think of the rolling hills and roads lined with Cypress trees – this is the Orcia Valley (Val d’Orcia), named after the Orcia river which runs through the area. Extending from the hills in southern Siena down to Monte Amiata, you will find well-known towns and villages such as Pienza and Montalcino.

We sat down and spoke with the General Manager, Claudia Giuliani, of one of our favourite Tuscan retreats, Locanda in Tuscany, to uncover some local hot spots and tips for your awaiting Tuscan adventure.

What’s the perfect 24 hours in your city?

Whoever comes to Val d’Orcia should take one full day to discover the wineries there are in the area and try the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine right from the producers.

What restaurants would you recommend to impress?

Definitely Osticcio in Montalcino! It is the best place for a gourmet experience with a spectacular view over the valley. For an authentic traditional Tuscan experience, we definitely suggest Taverna di Mozart – our onsite restaurant.

Where can a traveller find an authentic local experience in Val d’Orcia?

Bagno Vignoni is the most authentic cute little village close by. It is famous for having a big thermal pool instead of the traditional town square. For something a bit different, a fun night out could include you bathing under the stars here
I also recommend Monticchiello and to enjoy a full day tour to Siena – such a beautiful city to be visited. You can also take a day trip to the Chianti region as well as San Gimignano.

What’s your best advice for someone visiting Val d’Orcia?

Don’t expect to rush. Life in the valley is very slow and relaxed. To make the most our of your visit, try to stay at least 2-3 nights to make the most of the area.

Any other tips, hints or must experience suggestions?

For something a bit different, visit in November for the truffle hunting seasonis a must.
Don’t miss the cooking classes at our hotel, Locanda in Tuscany, where you can learn how to make the famous pici pasta or any kind of traditional Tuscan dish.

We have a number of Tuscany itineraries, for both small group and private itineraries, or customise your own!
