About Castlerigg Stone Circle
England
Castlerigg is one of Britain’s most atmospheric prehistoric monuments: a ring of 38 standing stones probably dating from around 4,500 years ago, set on a natural plateau with panoramic views towards the surrounding mountains. Its purpose remains uncertain, although its setting and possible relationship with seasonal astronomy have fuelled centuries of speculation. Unlike many major archaeological sites, Castlerigg remains wonderfully open and atmospheric, allowing visitors to experience the landscape rather than simply observe a monument behind barriers. Entry is free and the site can be visited independently during daylight hours; limited parking makes walking from Keswick an attractive option.
