About Liverpool Maritime & Waterfront Heritage
England
Liverpool’s waterfront is the defining image of the city and a powerful reminder of its maritime past. The Royal Albert Dock, opened in 1846, is now home to museums, galleries, restaurants and cultural attractions within a remarkable collection of historic buildings. Further along the riverfront, the Three Graces — the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building — form one of Britain’s most recognisable architectural ensembles. The Royal Liver Building is particularly iconic, crowned by its famous Liver Birds. The waterfront was formerly part of Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, although the designation was removed in 2021; the buildings and maritime heritage remain of major historical significance. A walking route along the waterfront is easy to undertake independently, while a Mersey Ferry or guided waterfront tour offers another perspective from the river.
