Switzerland's four great cities are each distinct enough that visiting them in sequence feels like visiting four different countries. In autumn, when the travel pace slows and the light turns golden, moving between Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Geneva by first-class rail becomes one of the most satisfying European journeys available.

Four Cities. One Country. Infinite Variety.

The Grand Swiss Cities itinerary traces Switzerland's cultural spine from east to west. Zurich sets the tone: cosmopolitan, sophisticated, and far more interesting than its financial reputation suggests. Basel offers art in unexpected abundance. Bern, the federal capital, is a UNESCO-listed medieval treasure that most tourists walk straight through without realising what they're missing. And Geneva, on the shores of Lac Léman with Mont Blanc as a backdrop, brings the journey to a close with lakeside elegance.

In autumn, each city adds a layer. Zurich's Kunsthaus fills with serious visitors rather than summer tour groups. Basel's cultural calendar peaks in October and November. Bern's medieval arcades shelter evening strollers from autumn rain in the most charming way imaginable. And Geneva's Lake Geneva cruise — included in this itinerary — takes on a particular quality in autumn when the light is low and the mountains are reflected in clear, still water.

Zurich: Two Days Well Spent

The itinerary opens with two full days in Zurich, including a guided small group city tour that moves beyond the obvious. The guided tour connects Zurich's Roman origins, its medieval guilds, the Fraumnster Church with its Chagall stained-glass windows, and the Niederdorf district — which in autumn, with leaves falling over the cobblestones, is genuinely beautiful.

Insider Tip

Zurich's wine region produces an excellent Pinot Noir from the hillsides above the city. Ask your guide to point you towards a local wine bar in the Niederdorf that stocks it. You won't find it in many restaurants outside Switzerland.

Basel: 40 Museums and the Rhine

Basel has more museums per capita than almost any other city in Europe. The Kunstmuseum Basel is one of the world's great art collections. The Fondation Beyeler, in a Richard Meier building in the suburb of Riehen, is arguably the finest private art collection in the world. In autumn — after Art Basel's June frenzy has passed — these are places you can experience properly and at your own pace.

The Rhine is the other reason to love Basel in autumn. The city's inhabitants swim across the river in summer using waterproof bags. In autumn, they walk the banks, take trams across the bridges, and gather at the outdoor beer gardens that line the water for a last autumn session before winter closes them.

Bern: The Capital That Stopped Time

Bern is Switzerland's federal capital and it has taken remarkably good care of its medieval centre. The six kilometres of arcaded walkways — the famous Lauben — mean you can walk the entire old city in the rain without getting wet. In autumn, when the sandstone facades deepen in colour and the Aare River runs at its clearest green, Bern is beautiful. The Zytglogge, a 13th-century clock tower with astronomical mechanisms still operating, is one of the most extraordinary things in Switzerland that nobody talks about.

The itinerary's guided walking tour brings Bern's history to life — from its founding as a stronghold to its current role as Europe's quietly dignified diplomatic capital.

Geneva: Lakeside Elegance to Close

The journey ends in Geneva, where three nights give you time to understand a city that rewards patience. The Old Town, the Jet d'Eau, the Flower Clock — these are the standard moves. But the included Lake Geneva lunch cruise takes the experience somewhere else entirely. On the lake in autumn, with the Alps framing the northern shore and the Jet d'Eau catching the low light, it becomes clear why Geneva's lakeside location has attracted diplomats, writers, and exiles for three centuries.
