About Mont Salève
Geneva
Mont Salève, often referred to as Geneva’s local mountain, rises 900 metres above the Jet d’Eau and, although located on French soil, is an integral part of Geneva’s landscape and identity. Accessible by rail for more than 120 years, it has long attracted visitors with its stunning views over the canton of Geneva, the Jura Mountains, and, on clear days, Mont Blanc. Historically, a steam tram operated from Geneva to the foot of the Salève from 1887, where passengers could transfer to an electric cog railway that ascended the steep rock face to the summit ridge. Today, visitors can reach the top in just five minutes via the cable car from Le Pas de l’Echelle in Veyrier. From the summit, panoramic views stretch across the city, Lake Geneva, and the surrounding mountains. The area also offers several hiking trails from the upper station, including routes to the observatory and more challenging rocky paths suited to experienced hikers.
