Famed art museum with Michelangelo sculptures, including David, Renaissance paintings and Russian icons
About Accademia Gallery and the Statue of David
Florence
The Accademia is best known for housing Michelangelo’s David, and while the museum itself is relatively small compared to the Uffizi, the experience of seeing David in person is anything but. Carved from a single block of marble when Michelangelo was in his twenties, the statue stands over 5 metres tall and captures both serene beauty and explosive tension. His gaze is focused, his muscles are taut, and the details—veins in the hands, the slight twist in the torso—make the marble feel almost alive. The moment you enter the gallery’s central hall, the Galleria dei Prigioni, your eyes are drawn forward to David, framed at the end under a domed skylight. But the approach is just as powerful. On either side of the hall are Michelangelo’s Prisoners or Slaves—unfinished figures seemingly struggling to free themselves from the stone. Beyond Michelangelo, the Accademia holds works by other great Florentine artists, as well as a remarkable collection of musical instruments from the Medici court, including Stradivari violins and early pianos.
