The Musee D’Orsay
Major 19th- & 20th-century European art collections housed in a monumental, former railway station
About Musee D'Orsay
France
The Musée d’Orsay, located on the Left Bank of the Seine opposite the Tuileries Gardens, was originally the Gare d’Orsay train station, built for the 1900 World’s Fair. Transformed into a museum in 1986, it now showcases one of the world’s finest collections of 19th- and early 20th-century art. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures, photography and decorative arts, with a strong focus on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Iconic works like Van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhône, Monet’s Water Lilies, and Degas’ Ballet Rehearsal are among the highlights. The building itself, with its vast glass roof and ornate clock faces, is a masterpiece, blending industrial grandeur with elegance. Visitors often enjoy views of the Seine from behind the museum’s giant clock or relax in its stylish café beneath the vaulted ceilings.
