About Great Minster (Grossmünster)
Switzerland
The Grossmünster is a significant Romanesque Protestant church in Zürich, known for its historical and architectural importance. According to legend, Charlemagne founded the original church after his horse knelt at the tombs of Zürich’s patron saints, Felix and Regula. The construction of the current church began around 1100 and was completed by 1220. The church played a crucial role in the Swiss Reformation, serving as the base for reformer Huldrych Zwingli, who introduced significant liturgical changes in the 16th century. The church is celebrated for its Romanesque design, featuring medieval columns with intricate capitals and a beautifully carved portal. The twin towers, constructed between 1487 and 1492, originally had wooden steeples that were destroyed in a fire in 1763. The current neo-Gothic spires were added in the late 18th century. Inside, you can enjoy stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti and bronze doors by Otto Münch. The church also houses a museum in its cloister, offering insights into its historical significance.
