Lake Brienz
Lake east of Interlaken with turquoise water, boat cruises, waterfalls, walking paths and Alps view
About Lake Brienz
Bernese Oberland
Lake Brienz is a breathtaking turquoise alpine lake located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Stretching around 14 kilometres in length and 2.8 kilometres in width, the lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic mountain views. It is fed by glacial meltwaters from the Lütschine and Aare rivers, which give it its distinctive colour. You can enjoy scenic boat cruises on the lake, with stops at picturesque villages like Iseltwald and Brienz. The Giessbach Falls, a series of waterfalls cascading into the lake, are accessible by boat and a historic funicular railway. Hiking enthusiasts will find numerous trails around the lake, including a lakeside walk from Bönigen to Giessbach. The lake is also perfect for water sports such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and swimming in its clear waters. The town of Brienz, located at the eastern end of the lake, is famous for its wood carving industry and the Swiss Woodcarving Museum. For stunning views of the region, you can take a nostalgic steam-powered journey on the Brienz Rothorn Railway to the summit of Brienzer Rothorn. Lake Brienz is easily accessible from Interlaken by train, boat, or car.
