About Castles of Bellinzona
Bellinzona
“The Castles of Bellinzona—Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro—form a striking medieval defensive system in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, these castles represent the best-preserved example of a fortified town in the Alpine region, connected by walls and ramparts.
– Castelgrande – the most prominent of the three, stands atop a rocky hill at 275 meters above sea level. Its origins date to the 1st century BC, with major expansions in the 13th century. The castle complex includes impressive ramparts, two towers—the White and Black Towers—and a museum that explores over 6,500 years of history from Neolithic times to the 20th century
– Montebello Castle – constructed in the 13th and 14th centuries, sits on a ridge east of the city
– Sasso Corbaro – the highest of the three, was built in 1479 on a solitary promontory southeast of the city.”
