About St Patricks Cathedral
Co. Dublin
Founded in 1191 St Patrick’s is the largest cathedral in Ireland. It was built on the site where it is believed that St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, baptized converts to Christianity in the 5th century. The cathedral features stunning stained-glass windows, ornate carvings and intricate stonework. The interior is filled with vaulted ceilings, wooden pews, and beautiful altars. The choir is one of the most significant features of the cathedral, with a magnificent organ and an impressive choir gallery. Jonathan Swift, the famous author of “Gulliver’s Travels”, was the Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral from 1713 to 1745 and his grave is located in the cathedral. The Guinness family also has a significant connection to the cathedral as the brewery mogul Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness donated a large sum of money to restore the cathedral, ensuring its preservation when it faced financial difficulties in the 17th century. St. Patrick’s Cathedral also houses the St. Patrick’s Cathedral Visitor Centre, which includes an interactive museum.
