About Christ Church Cathedral
Co. Dublin
“Christ Church Cathedral was founded in 1030 by Dunlang, King of Dublin, although the building we see today has been significantly altered over the centuries. The cathedral was originally built as part of a Viking settlement and was later expanded and refurbished during the Norman period. The cathedral went through extensive restorations in the 19th century under the direction of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, the great-grandson of the founder of the Guinness Brewery, who funded much of the work. One of the most impressive features of Christ Church is its crypt, the largest of any cathedral in Britain and Ireland. The crypt contains medieval tombstones, relics, and a small museum. It also houses the remains of important figures from Dublin’s history, including Archbishop John de Derlington.
