About Villa San Michele
Campania
Villa San Michele, located 327 metres above sea level in Anacapri on Capri, is an historic villa and museum famous for its remarkable architecture and stunning panoramic views. Built by Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the villa was constructed on the site of a medieval chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, with Munthe’s vision of creating a home open to the sun, wind, and sea. The villa’s design reflects classical architecture, inspired by Greek temples and Roman houses, and its gardens are among the most beautiful in Italy, featuring relics and artworks from ancient Egypt and classical antiquity. After Munthe’s death in 1949, the property was given to Sweden as a centre for artistic and humanitarian studies. Today, it attracts around 125,000 visitors annually, offering a glimpse into Munthe’s legacy and providing a peaceful and inspiring experience with breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
