About Stirling Castle
Scotland
Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most important and historically significant castles, perched on a volcanic crag overlooking the River Forth. It played a key role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and was a favoured royal residence of the Stewart monarchs. The castle’s strategic position made it a vital military stronghold, and it has witnessed many famous events, including the coronation of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1543. Much of the present structure dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, with highlights including the Great Hall, the Royal Palace, and the Chapel Royal. The interiors have been carefully restored to reflect Renaissance splendour, particularly in the royal apartments, which feature replica furniture, tapestries, and artwork. Costumed guides and exhibitions bring the castle’s rich history to life, offering insight into court life, military history, and the turbulent politics of medieval Scotland. Stirling Castle also offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, including the site of the Battle of Bannockburn and the Wallace Monument.
