About Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti)
Italy
The Spanish Steps connect Piazza di Spagna at the base with the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. The steps were built in the early 18th century and have become a popular meeting place in Rome. At the base of the steps, you’ll find the Barcaccia Fountain, designed by Pietro Bernini and his son, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Shaped like a half-sunken ship, the fountain is a popular spot for photos. The church at the top of the steps offers stunning views of Rome and is an architectural gem itself. The surrounding area is filled with high-end shops, charming cafes, and gelaterias, making it a perfect place to relax and people-watch. The name “Spanish Steps” comes from the nearby Spanish Square, named after the Palace of Spain where the Spain Embassy is located.
