Santa Maria dell’Isola
An iconic symbol of Tropea and one of Calabria’s most picturesque landmarks
About Santa Maria dell'Isola
Calabria
Perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, Santa Maria dell’Isola is Tropea’s most iconic landmark. Though once an island, it is now connected to the mainland and accessible via a staircase carved into the rock. The sanctuary dates back to the early Middle Ages and was later managed by Benedictine monks during Norman rule.
Rebuilt multiple times due to earthquakes, the church today features Gothic touches and a peaceful interior. Its gardens and panoramic views over Tropea’s old town and the “Coast of the Gods” make it a memorable stop. Santa Maria dell’Isola is still a place of worship and plays a central role during the annual Feast of the Assumption in August. Combining history, spirituality, and spectacular scenery, it’s a highlight of any visit to Calabria.
