Predjama Castle
13th-century castle built in cliff face cave, with restored living areas, dungeons and secret tunnel
About Predjama Castle
Predjama
Predjama Castle is a striking Renaissance fortress located in the southwest of Slovenia, near the town of Postojna. Perched dramatically in the mouth of a 123-metre-high cave, the castle is one of the most unique and picturesque in Europe. Built into the cliffside in the 16th century, it blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, with the cave serving as a natural defence system. The castle’s history is equally fascinating. It was the home of the notorious knight Erazem Lueger, who used it as a base for his rebellious activities against the Habsburgs. According to legend, the castle’s secret tunnels allowed him to escape during sieges, making it a symbol of resistance. Today, you can explore its well-preserved interiors, including the knight’s quarters, the chapel, and the impressive banquet hall. The surrounding landscape is equally spectacular, with lush greenery and caves adding to the castle’s dramatic appeal.
