Piazza del Plebiscito
Pedestrianised landmark square with equestrian statues, home to the neo-classical Royal Palace
About Piazza del Plebiscito
Campania
Piazza del Plebiscito is the largest and most iconic square in Naples, Italy, located near the Gulf of Naples and framed by some of the city’s most significant architectural landmarks. Originally planned in the early 19th century by Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law and then King of Naples, the square was intended to celebrate Napoleon’s reign. However, its design was later completed under the Bourbon King Ferdinand I, who reimagined it as a tribute to the restored monarchy. The square gets its name from the 1860 plebiscite that brought Naples into the newly unified Kingdom of Italy. Dominating the western end of the piazza is the grand neoclassical Church of San Francesco di Paola, with its sweeping colonnade and dome inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. Opposite the church stands the Royal Palace of Naples, which faces a semi-circular arrangement of elegant colonnades that wrap around the square, creating a balanced and majestic urban space. Statues of notable kings of Naples line the palace façade, adding historical depth to the setting.
