About Pantheon
Italy
The Pantheon in Rome is one of the most iconic and well-preserved monuments of ancient Rome. Originally built as a temple for all Roman gods, it is now a church known as the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs. The Pantheon’s dome with a diameter of 43.3 metres, is the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The Oculus, a 9-metre-wide circular opening at the dome’s centre, allows natural light to illuminate the interior, symbolising the connection between heaven and earth. The Pantheon serves as the final resting place for several notable figures from Italian history and art including Raphael – the famed Renaissance artist, Victor Emmanuel II – the first king of unified Italy, and his wife Queen Margherita who is remembered for her influence on Italian culture.
