About Our Lady of the Rocks & St. George Islet
Montenegro
Set in the Bay of Kotor near Perast, these two islets are steeped in maritime lore. Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island created over centuries by local seamen who dropped stones in the bay after surviving perilous journeys. At its heart is a 17th-century church, richly decorated with Baroque art, silver votives, and tapestries – including one famously embroidered with human hair. Nearby lies St. George, a natural island hosting a 12th-century Benedictine monastery and cemetery, off-limits to the public but hauntingly photogenic.
