National Museum of Ireland: Archaeology
Local archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, Vikings and medieval times with some Egyptian items
About National Museum of Ireland: Archaeology
Co. Dublin
Located on Kildare Street in the heart of Dublin, the museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts spanning prehistoric times, the Viking Age, and medieval Ireland. Amongst the museum’s artifacts you’ll find the Ardagh Chalice, a stunning 8th-century chalice considered one of Ireland’s greatest treasures. One of the most intriguing exhibits in the museum showcases the remains of individuals who were preserved in Ireland’s peat bogs for thousands of years. These well-preserved bog bodies date back to the Iron Age and provide insights into ancient burial practices, diet, and rituals. In the impressive Viking section you’ll find a display of Viking swords, axes and tools, and artifacts unearthed during excavations in Dublin, once a major Viking settlement. Entry to the museum is free, though there may be a fee for visiting special exhibitions.
