About Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)
Central Switzerland
The Lion Monument is a solemn rock relief dedicated to the Swiss Guards who were killed in 1792 during the French Revolution. Created by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn between 1820 and 1821, the sculpture depicts a dying lion impaled by a spear, symbolising the guards’ bravery and sacrifice. Set within a rocky grotto in a peaceful park, the monument provides a reflective atmosphere. It’s best to visit the popular attraction during quieter times, such as early mornings or late afternoons, to fully appreciate its significance.
