Lama Monachile
Compact cove known for its clear water and pebble beach, flanked by dramatic, rugged cliffs
About Lama Monachile
Italy
Lama Monachile, also called Cala Porto, is one of the most iconic and scenic spots in Polignano a Mare. This small, pebbled beach is nestled between towering limestone cliffs, creating a dramatic setting where the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea meet the rugged coastline. The beach is named after an ancient mule track (lama) that once connected the inland to the coast. A historic Roman bridge, part of the ancient Via Traiana, spans the narrow gorge, offering panoramic views of the beach below. Popular with swimmers, sunbathers, and cliff divers, Lama Monachile is also a favourite subject for photographers due to its postcard-perfect scenery. The area around the beach is lined with charming whitewashed buildings, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.
