Lake Skadar National Park
A Tranquil Haven of Monks, Birds, and Vintners
About Lake Skadar National Park
Lake Skadar
Lake Skadar, shared by Montenegro and Albania, is the Balkans’ largest lake and a designated national park. Historically significant, the lake’s islets once housed Orthodox monasteries that served as spiritual refuges and cultural centers during the Ottoman period. Today, visitors can discover 14th-century monasteries like Kom and Beška, explore quaint fishing villages like Virpazar, or enjoy wine tastings in nearby Crmnica. The lake is also a haven for birdwatchers, hosting over 280 species including the rare Dalmatian pelican. Boat rides through lily-covered waters offer serene views and local insights.
