About Hohensalzburg Fortress
Austria
Hohensalzburg Fortress is perched around 400 metres above the city, offering stunning panoramic views of Salzburg, the Salzach River and the surrounding Alpine mountains. The complex consists of several buildings, including towers, courtyards, bastions, and gates, as well as several fascinating museums that showcase the fortress’s long history and its role in the region’s military and cultural development. The fortress also contains an historic prison where dungeon cells and punishment chambers are preserved to show how prisoners were treated in earlier centuries. One of the best ways to reach the fortress is by taking the funicular railway (Festungsbahn), which runs from the Old Town up to the fortress in just a few minutes. This cable car offers stunning views of the city as you ascend and is a convenient and scenic way to access the site.
