About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Lake Bled
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Cerkev Marijinega Vnebovzetja) is a beautiful Roman Catholic church located on Bled Island in Lake Bled, Slovenia. Known for its Baroque architecture, the church dates back to the 17th century, although the site has been a place of worship since the 7th or 8th century. Accessible only by boat, visitors typically reach the island by traditional pletna boats or rowboats. Upon arrival, a set of 99 stone steps leads to the church, a tradition tied to marriage customs. Inside, the church features Gothic frescoes, Baroque altars, and a bell tower with the famous “wishing bell.”
