About Chedworth Villa
England
Chedworth Roman Villa, located in a peaceful wooded valley in Gloucestershire’s Cotswolds, is one of the most significant Roman archaeological sites in Britain. Originally built around 120 AD, the villa expanded and reached its peak in the 4th century. It features impressive mosaics, two bathhouses and a sophisticated hypocaust system for underfloor heating, showcasing the wealth and luxury of its occupants. The villa was discovered by chance in 1864 and later excavated. In 1924, it was acquired by the National Trust, which has since preserved and protected the site, including the construction of a modern shelter to safeguard the mosaics. You can explore the well-preserved remains, including the mosaics, bathhouses, and a nymphaeum (a water shrine), offering a fascinating insight into Roman Britain. The site is still actively excavated, with new discoveries continuing to be made.
