Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)
Landmark 1300s wooden bridge with grand stone water tower and a roof decorated with 17th-century art
About Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)
Central Switzerland
Lucerne’s famous Chapel Bridge is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe, dating to 1333. It spans the Reuss River, connecting the Old Town to newer parts of the city. One of the most distinctive features of the bridge is its interior, which once housed 158 triangular paintings created between 1614 and 1617. These paintings depicted scenes from Lucerne’s history, including the lives of saints and significant events. Unfortunately, a fire in 1993 destroyed much of the bridge and many of the paintings. However, restoration efforts have preserved some of the original artworks, which can still be seen today. The Chapel Bridge is not only a historical landmark but also a symbol of Lucerne’s rich cultural heritage. Its picturesque setting, especially when illuminated at night, makes it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. It’s best visited during daylight hours to fully appreciate its beauty and historical significance.
