Cefalú Cathedral (Duomo di Cefalù)
Fortress-like Norman cathedral known for its elaborate Byzantine mosaics and soaring twin towers
About Cefalú Cathedral (Duomo di Cefalù)
Cefalù
Cefalù Cathedral is a stunning example of Norman architecture, located in the charming coastal town of Cefalù. Built in the 12th century under the orders of King Roger II, the cathedral features a blend of Norman, Arab, and Byzantine influences, which is typical of the era’s architectural style in Sicily. The cathedral’s most striking feature is its large, golden mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, which adorns the apse and is one of the finest examples of Byzantine art in the region. The cathedral’s façade is adorned with impressive arches, columns, and a grand entrance, while its interior is equally magnificent with detailed artwork, medieval frescoes, and a beautiful wooden ceiling. Cefalù Cathedral is a focal point of the town and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.”
