Baptistery of San Giovanni
Iconic octagonal basilica with striking marble facade, known for its bronze doors and mosaic ceiling
About Baptistery of San Giovanni
Florence
The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of the oldest and most revered buildings in Florence, standing directly in front of the Duomo and serving as the city’s primary place of Christian baptism for centuries. Its striking octagonal shape, golden mosaics, and detailed marble exterior make it a standout architectural landmark, and it’s one of the most significant examples of early Christian architecture in Italy. The building is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, Florence’s patron saint, and it’s renowned for its stunning byzantine-style mosaics that cover the interior dome. The exterior of the Baptistery is equally striking, with its three sets of bronze doors that feature intricate reliefs. The most famous set, known as the Gates of Paradise, was created by the artist Lorenzo Ghiberti in the 15th century and is considered one of the greatest achievements of Renaissance sculpture. The doors depict scenes from the Old Testament, and Ghiberti’s use of perspective and detail was revolutionary for the time. One of the most significant aspects of the Baptistery is its historical role as the place of baptism for many notable Florentines, including Dante Alighieri, the famous poet and author of The Divine Comedy. The font where baptisms took place is still present inside, making it a deeply sacred and historic space.
