Ancient Akrotiri
Enclosed archeological site featuring an excavation of a preserved Bronze Age settlement
About Ancient Akrotiri
Greece
Ancient Akrotiri is a remarkably well-preserved Minoan Bronze Age settlement, buried by a volcanic eruption around 1600 BCE. Often called the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” it was covered in volcanic ash that preserved multi-storey buildings, vivid frescoes, pottery, and advanced infrastructure like drainage systems. The absence of human remains suggests residents evacuated before the eruption. Today, the site is housed under a protective roof offering a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric Aegean life.
