About Acropolis & Parthenon
Athens
The Acropolis and the Parthenon are among the most significant ancient monuments in Greece and Western civilisation. The Acropolis, which means “”high city”” in Greek, is a rocky outcrop that rises above Athens and was used as a religious and ceremonial centre. It became the spiritual heart of the city, primarily dedicated to Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. At the summit of the Acropolis stands the Parthenon, the most famous and revered of its structures. Constructed between 447 and 432 BCE during the leadership of Pericles, the Parthenon was built to honour Athena Parthenos. It exemplifies Doric architecture and was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates, with sculptural decoration by the renowned artist Phidias. The temple once housed a colossal gold-and-ivory statue of the goddess. Over centuries, the Parthenon served various roles—from temple to church, mosque, and even munitions storage—suffering damage along the way, including a major explosion in the 17th century. Despite this, its ruins remain an enduring symbol of ancient Greek art, philosophy, and democracy, attracting millions of visitors to Athens every year.
