Your Ultimate Insiders Guide to Malta

Malta boasts a rich culture and history, that must be experienced to be fully appreciated. With so much to see and do, we’ve got the experts on the ground to give us the best tips for your next trip.

We chat With Louise, our Malta specialist on the ground, to give you the best insider tips on authentic local experiences and must-see unique sites.

What can you share about what makes Malta unique compared to other places?
Enjoy a night walk in Mdina (Malta’s former capital city). Eat pastizzi at Is-Serkin, Rabat. Attend a local village feast (happening all throughout summer), take a walk at sunset along the Dingli cliffs – the views are spectacular! Stroll along the marina in Birgu (one of the Three Cities) and get lost in the beautiful historic streets.

Where in Malta can you find an authentic local experience?
Visit the three cities and make sure to include a boat ride in the harbour. Head to the Marsaxlokk fish market (on Sundays), and make sure to stop by the quaint villages in Gozo (Malta’s sister island).

Which day trips, outside of Valletta and St Julian’s would you recommend?

Malta has a rich history. I recommend Rabat & Mdina, Mosta, including the Mosta Dome, Mnajdra Temples, Hypogeum and Hagar Qim – a collection of megalithic buildings.

Are there any sites in Malta that are often missed that you think are a must-see?
Some sites in Gozo are often forgotten including Gnejna Bay, the old salt pans in Gozo. You should also visit Wied l-Ghasri in Gozo, a coastal gorge with a boutique beach and crystal clear water, a real wonder of nature.

Where are some of your favourite places to eat in Malta?
An all time favourite for me is Ta’ Carmen at the fishing cove of Ghar Lapsi, Diar il Bniet in the village of Dingli, Ta’ Rikardu on the Island of Gozo.
We love to munch on fresh strawberries in springtime (sold at local village vegetable stalls). While afternoon tea at Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar is spectacular.

See some more recommended eating spots on our blog here.

Are there any other tips you could share with our readers?
Chill out at some of the island’s open air night clubs in Rabat, and experience Malta’s nightlife in Strait Street Valletta – it was the pinnacle of nightlife amongst American and British military men between the 19th and mid-20th century!

Blue Lagoon – Malta’s No 1 attraction located in Comino island

Admire Malta’s stunning churches situated all over Malta & Gozo, revisit history at Fort St Elmo, and appreciate art at St John’s Cathedral.
And don’t miss taking a dip in Comino’s Blue Lagoon.
