1) Make sure your passport is valid
Don’t forget to keep an eye on your passport’s expiration date! As a matter of fact, many countries all over the world require a valid passport for at least six months after your arrival date. Without this, your home country may not even check you in to your departing flight. So if you don’t want to be denied entry to a country, make sure you have enough time before the expiry date and renew if you need to.
2) Keep a copy of your Important Documents
Sometimes when you’re travelling you may not have access to the internet, so having a paper copy of any important documents or itinerary can be useful. It’s also a good idea if you leave a copy of all the important travel documents and itinerary with someone you trust like your family or one of your best friends.
If you find yourself in the scenario where some of your documents get lost or stolen, it is important to have photocopies in order to avoid any potential problems. For example, if you were to lose your passport, a copy will help aid you in being able to prove your citizenship.
3) Be sure to check-in with your doctor
Visit your doctor before your trip to make sure that you have all of the proper vaccinations. Make sure to do this early on as you may need to schedule in a number of vaccines prior to leaving. If you take any prescription medications you may also need to buy enough to take away with you. This may also require a doctor’s note so that the pharmaceuticals can be clarified by customs in each country.
4) What to pack and what not to pack when travelling
An extra set of clothes in case of emergencies is always handy. Something that can be packed in your carry on luggage incase something goes wrong with the airlines and you’re stuck at your destination without any baggage (most insurance companies will then give an allowance for purchasing clothes if needed). Keep your toiletries in a plastic bag, incase of any ‘overflows’ caused by compression during the flight. Packing some snacks is also a good idea, for when you are travelling between destinations.
5) Call your debit and credit card companies
Let you banks know the places you will be visiting and when. This is a great habit to get into if you want to avoid any potential problems. In fact, banks limit losses from fraud and they can suspend your account if you use it in unusual locations. They may think your credit card has been stolen or lost; and they will put a block on your credit card immediately. So make sure you should tell them you’re taking an overseas trip.
6) Make reservations in advance
Is there a special restaurant you want to eat at, or maybe a show or event that you’d love to go to? Don’t wait until you arrive at your destination, seats may already be booked out (sometimes months in advance for popular restaurants, shows, and tours). By doing this, you can also potentially get a better deal and it will save you a bundle. You can avoid lines as well.
