Piedmont: Pioneering the Slow Food movement

Piedmont: Pioneering the Slow Food movement – Think you’ve ticked Italian food and wine travel off your list? Perhaps not. Welcome to Piedmont, Italy’s undiscovered northern region, pioneering the Slow Food movement along with their long history of producing fine wines.

The name Piedmont translates to “foot of the mountain”, as the region is surrounded on all three sides by the Alps. Its varied landscape provides fertile soil for an impressive array of local specialties.

Piedmont is clearly one of Italy’s leading gastronomic regions. From cheese and chocolates to risotto – almost two thirds of Italy’s rice is grown on the wet plains around the communes of Vercelli and Novara – and truffles; sniffed out by dogs in the hills and woodlands.

The area also has some fantastic museums and baroque architecture to take in. The popular town of Alba features the Romanesque Alba Cathedral, dating to the 12th century, and is home to the world-renowned Ferrero confectionery company. It is also considered the capital of Langhe and formerly known as the city with a hundred towers.
