Discover a Hidden Corner of Piedmont: Alto Monferrato

Even in a year when tourism is halted there is much going on in the Piedmont Region. Aided by local institutions dedicated to promoting the excellent Eno- gastronomy and natural beauty of the area, Alto Monferrato is starting to emerge on the international tourist scene.

Located in the southeast region of Piedmont, near the Ligurian border, this is an area of rare beauty. Rolling hills blanketed with vineyards are backed by mountains covered in thick chestnuts woods through which crystalline creeks bathe tiny hamlets dominated by medieval castles.

Visitors to the city of Ovada, population near 11,000, will be enchanted by the history, the characteristic houses, and the alleys of the town. The open-air antiques markets are scheduled throughout the year, drawing both collectors and the curious, and will prove a wonderful way to learn more about the region and maybe pick up a treasure or two.

In this area two small local business are growing and making investments in order to welcome local visitors and prepare to welcome international travelers when travel bans are lifted.

Tenuta Alemanni is “brand new” winery founded by Annamaria Alemanni in 2002, passing the business to her Chiara, supported by the father Claudio younger sister Giorgia, in 2019. Vineyards that were planted by the grandfather are now tended by the entire family, producing wines following tradition but also embracing innovation in growing Riesling, Cortese and Dolcetto di Ovada grapes.

Extending local hospitality is a priority for Chiara, and food-wine tasting experiences will be available in the new panoramic tasting room currently under construction. The location is dramatically beautiful, on a hilltop facing the ancient Castle of Tagliolo Monferrato, an amazing wine estate and wedding location, owned by the Pinelli Gentile family for over six hundred years.

Another remarkable location is the Agriturismo A modo mio, run by Alessandro and Federica and located in Molare next to the Orba in the foothills of the Apennines. The cuisine is local and delicious; you can watch the seasonal vegetables being picked as you dine. Private cooking classes can be arranged, and visitors can enjoy a relaxing farm stay in their country chic style rooms.
