Authentic Amsterdam – A Historical and Cultural Insight

Authentic Amsterdam – A Historical and Cultural Insight – The trajectory of Amsterdam’s development is a series of captivating stories, from jazz legends to political policy. During the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th Centure, Amsterdam truly flourished, and it was at this itme that artists such as Rembrandt led a cultural renaissance in the city, whilst Dutch ships sailed all over the world.

During this time the city underwent two major urban expansions, resulting in the now-famous canals and the Jordaan district. Over the next 30 years Amsterdam became a thriving city of culture, as it was a magnet for immigrants often fleeing persecution in their homelands. Check out the Amsterdam Model City Tour for a great way to explore more of the city’s history and culture.

Local Customs

A visit to Amsterdam simply wouldn’t be complete without a bike ride. It is recognized around the globe as the most bicycle-friendly city in the world and the Dutch are keen cyclists. Our docents enjoy having the opportunity to lead bike tours and we are always glad to help visitors plan a custom route that suits their level of fitness, not to mention courage – the streets of Amsterdam can be hectic but there are amazing backroads for those who are feeling hesitant about tackling the traffic.

It’s also worthwhile to take the ferry from the Central Station over to the north part of the city. The ride takes you across the open waters of the River IJ to Amsterdam Noord, where the denizens of the creative scene have made their home in recent years. This area boasts the fantastic EYE Filmmuseum, Tolhuistuin (‘Tollhouse Garden’), and many other cultural venues where you can catch concerts and exhibitions or mingle with locals over a meal in one of the newly opened restaurants that are popping up in the neighbourhood.

Adventurous eating is one of the best ways to connect deeply with the cultural life of a city, so visitors should sample traditional salt-cured herring from a fish stand and eat it like a local – holding it up by the tail. For sweet tooths, there’s nothing better than biting into the thin cookies and soft caramel filling of a Stroopwafel.

There are many other beers to enjoy beyond the famed Heineken brews and the best can be found on tap at one of the city’s heritage breweries, where the craft has been practiced for centuries.

Many people are familiar with the lax regulations in the Netherlands in regards to drugs and prostitution, but it becomes starkly apparent when you walk through the Red Light District, which is still operational today, or past one of the ubiquitous coffee shops. Take heed: a so-called “coffee shop” serves something rather stronger than coffee! For a beverage or pastry, seek out a “cafe” instead.
