6 Destination Swaps for your Europe Fix in Western Australia

Can’t get to Europe? No worries…we’ve got your covered with a few perfect swaps right here in Australia.  Stunning sunsets, hidden bays and beaches, and natural wonders are all highlights of the vast state of Western Australia.

1) Swap Puglia’s Polignano a Mare, Italy for Denmark, WA

Looking for a unique beach in Australia?  Located in William Bay National Park, Denmark, Elephant Rocks is known for its unique formation, with the rocks looking like a herd of elephants gazing at the water. The formation can be viewed from a lookout, but for the more adventurous, a staircase allows access to Elephant Cove and an up close view of the formation.  Like Polignano a Mare in Puglia, this is a beautiful place to relax, swim and enjoy the natural delight.

2) Swap Blue Grotto, Capri for the Staircase to the Moon, Broome, WA

The Blue Grotto, off the Sorrento Coast in Capri, is world famous for the glimmering blue light that occurs due to the sunlight entering the underwater cave.

For years, visitors have flocked to experience the fairy tale like glow of this natural wonder.  In Broome, Western Australia, the Staircase to the Moon offers a similar fairy tale experience.  From March through to October, for 2-3 days each month when the moon is full, visit Town Beach to see the beauty of the natural moonlight that creates an optical illusion of stairs reaching to the moon.

3) Swap Torcal de Antequera, Malaga, Spain for The Pinnacles, WA

In Malaga, Spain you can visit Torcal de Antequera to enjoy a hike and view the unusual landforms created by the natural limestone.  Western Australia has a similar natural beauty, only 2 hours north of Perth.  Head to the Pinnacles Desert in the Nambung National Park to wonder at the huge limestone pillars.

Over 25,000 years old, the structures showcase the natural landscape beautifully – a perfect Europe swap in Western Australia.  Enjoy the surrounds and the varying colours of the landscape that is the desert, sand dunes and Indian Ocean. Look out for the local kangaroos and emus. Stay into the evening to gaze in awe at the Milky Way galaxy.

4) Swap Sardinia’s Tuerredda Beach, Italy for The Basin, Rottnest Island

Are you dreaming of the White sandy beaches and crystal waters of Sardinia?  Only a short ferry ride from Perth, Rottnest Island is home to over 80 beaches and bays.  The Basin is popular for the calm waters and the water is reminiscent of the Sardinian coastline. Rottnest Island is a natural marine paradise. Explore for a day or extend your stay with various accommodation options. And if you want some time out of the water you can continue your exploration by bike or foot.  Learn about the Aboriginal heritage with a walking tour.  Visit the underground tunnels, the lighthouse and Oliver Hill, all significant in the island’s military history.

5) Swap the sunset at Oia, Santorini for the sunsets of Western Australia

Santorini, Greece is host to one of the most famous sunsets around the world.  Travellers in Oia are transfixed by the stunning colours.  The sun setting highlights an already gorgeous setting.  Western Australia too, offers travellers an amazing choice of locations to view the sun setting.  If in Perth, choose from Cottlesloe Beach or Kings Park.  And like the sun setting in Oia is a daily ritual for many, Thompson Bay at Rottnest Island is also popular with its peaceful setting.

If you have the opportunity to travel to the north of the State you will be rewarded with the most glorious of sunsets.  From the kaleidoscope of colours in Esperance to the dramatic colours of cable beach or the magical natural setting of King George Falls.  A sunset in Western Australia will not disappoint.

6) Swap Sicily’s Teatro Greco, Taormina for Leeuwin Estate, Margaret River

Taormina is home to Teatro Greco, an ancient amphitheatre in Taormina, Sicily.  With a stunning coastal backdrop, the Teatro has been the spectacular host for many outdoor concerts in the Sicilian Summer. Likewise, Leeuwin Estate in the Margaret River, hosts equally spectacular concerts in their own natural amphitheatre.  Surrounded by the Karri Forest, enjoy the estates own food and wine alfresco while you are being entertained.  Prior to the performance you may want to visit the cellar door and art gallery. Touch, sight, smell, taste, listen – a delightful day and evening to satisfy all of your senses.

Get lost in Western Australia and enjoy these Europe swaps this year.
